Joe Biden his family and his senior aides were convinced that only he could beat Donald Trump in the 2024 Presidential Election. So convinced, in fact, that they lied to themselves, allies and the public about his condition and limitations – all but dooming the Democrats to defeat. Here, two of America’s best-respected political journalists take us behind closed doors to uncover the full, unsettling truth about Biden’s decline, and exposing the wider cover-up as an unprecedented deception of the public.
Hailed as an instant classic of political journalism, this is the book that revealed Biden's decision to run again as the original sin of his presidency - leading directly to Donald Trump’s return to power, and all that has come since.

Hey Joe
4.5 stars
The sub-title says it all. I’m no fan of #orangemanbad, and neither are the journos who wrote this book: Tapper’s from CNN, Thompson from Axios. However, the admittedly circumstantial evidence documented is extensive and damning, and paints a grim picture of the cover-up that went on inside the White House until the debate fiasco in June 2024.
The reviews on Goodreads vary widely depending on the politics of the reviewer, but the reportage seems objective to me, the prose crisp, and the pace good. The best I can say for the Biden White House (which includes Dr Jill), is that the Nixon was worse. Of course, Nixon was a lot smarter than Biden to start with.
Disappointing and frustrating
Disappointing that Biden and his inner circle refused to see reality until it was too late.
Frustrating that experienced journalists such as Tapper and Thompson refused to explore the media’s preferential highlighting of Biden’s flaws over Trump’s increasingly authoritarian rhetoric.
Unfair in its tenuous insinuations that Trump’s worst excesses can be blamed on Biden’s mistakes.
