Early in the 2013-14 school year, I taught the poem Ozymandias by Percy Bysshe Shelley, which is a text that appears on the Common Core State Standards exemplar texts for grades 9-10. For the uninitiated, the Common Core State Standards inform teachers what they should teach students of what grade level. Text complexity and citing evidence to write arguments are some of the more prominent features. My lesson was about annotating every line of a poem to look for the deeper connections to be able to make an argument about the nature of power, which is a useful skill for kids, but it gets old fast.
This enhanced e-book teaches the deeper connections and meaning of the poem in a variety of ways, with fun, engaging activities for readers, some of them connecting to social media networking opportunities. The main idea is for you to feel like you exist in the world of the poem, and that you are an active participant. I hope you are able to explore Ozymandias in all it’s glory and that you feel like you know the poem intimately.
