The author combines ethnography, history, and sociolinguistics to create a context for an examination of the Pachuca/o/Calo phenomena. Cummings identifies two major currents prevalent in the literature surrounding Pachuca/os/Calo. One trend is set within a framework deviance and the other trend encompasses a cross cultural focus based on history, social class, power relations, economic processes and identity.
