The thrilling first Dirk Pitt classic from multi-million-copy king of the adventure novel, Clive Cussler.
Fully armed and with all hands on board, the nuclear submarine Starbuck sailed into the calm Pacific Ocean for sea trials - and vanished. 'Do not search for us, it can only end in vain . . . ' A crazed journal of madness and death is all that remains. And the Captain's final, scrawled, fear-crazed note locates the Starbuck's grave hundreds of miles from her last known position! The search for the Starbuck plunges Dirk Pitt into his most shattering assignment to date - a whirlpool of deep-sea mystery and terror - the Pacific Vortex!

Pacific Vortex or Pacific Cliche?
Seriously, we all know Cussler is a florid and wordy guy with 2 dimensional characters, wall to wall stereotypes and ridiculous plots, but this is ridiculous- er.
I was prepared for and looking forward to, a little bit of Cussler froth and bubble, some silly derring-do and a few nubile bits of window dressing, but half the time Pacific Vortex doesn't even make sense. The continuity editor was clearly asleep at the wheel - the inconsistencies are so numerous and blatant. Its like Big Clive went partying on Ibiza until the weekend before the deadline and then spat the whole novel out using Dragon Dictation and some scribbles he'd made on drink coasters over the preceding 3 months. Then his editor ran a spell checker over it, had his 8 year old check some facts and sent it to the printers.
Cussler loves implausible plots and is loved dearly for his fevered imagination, but the entire premise for this novel makes your average James Bond scenario look like a documentary about the British Intelligence Service. Pitt comes across as less roguishly charming than misogynistic, the villain is just pointless and silly (golden contact lenses, really?), his henchman are worse, the female characters are so feeble they would offend any woman with an IQ greater than her bra size and the manner in which basic laws of physics are utterly ignored is so laughable that even the most willing suspension of disbelief is stretched to breaking and then utterly pulverized under the weight of Cussler's horrible dialog.
Did I say horrible dialog? I have heard Kevin Rudd sound less stilted. If you read it out loud make sure no-one near electronic equipment has just taken a mouthful of coffee - the resulting snort of derision and disbelief could wreck their nasal passages and ruin whatever kit they were facing. It's that bad. It really is.
Seriously, I want my money back. It's criminal to turn out trash like Pacific Vortex and rely on the Cussler brand to lure hopeful readers into wasting their time and money. Shame, Clive. Shame on you. Dirk would be disgusted.
The first of many!
This was an epic and fitting start to the adventures of Major Dirk Pitt! A fantastic read. Do yourself a favour…
