Poetics

Poetics is Aristotle’s foundational work on literary theory, especially the nature of tragedy, epic poetry, plot, character, and dramatic structure. Drawing on examples from ancient Greek literature, Aristotle explains how effective stories create emotional impact through imitation, conflict, recognition, reversal, and catharsis. He examines the essential elements of tragedy and argues that a well-constructed plot is central to powerful drama. The work also considers language, thought, spectacle, and the role of the poet. Though written more than two thousand years ago, Poetics remains highly influential in literature, theatre, storytelling, criticism, and the study of narrative form.
