Publisher Description

What is hiding behind the extremely aggravated security situation in the state and which are the possible developments of the situation? The holes of the police bullets on the white "Mercedes Sprinter" van and the death of four armed arms smugglers would have been the news not only for the dark chronicles, but also for the front pages even in a far more normal state than Macedonia. However, the predictions for inevitable retaliation and the danger of new inter-ethnic armed conflicts exploded more strongly than the bursts of the gunfire. The set-up of the police special units, which only two weeks ago, after capturing a large quantity of arms and explosives again on the border region of Banjanski Rid, an area that has not been under control for years--at about ten kilometers from the Skopje village of Radusa, cut-off another criminal-terrorist channel for "import of death" in Macedonia. In spite of the four casualties, this action would have been justified at home and abroad (because, in the end, this is the job of the security bodies--to protect the citizens and guarantee their security), had we not been struck by the defeating question: was it really necessary to radicalize the situation to the level where the police is covering for the impotent politics? Is there nobody in the authority who does not want or cannot understand that in order to stop arms trafficking from escalating into violence and organized conflicts or terrorism, the Government must harmonize the inter-ethnic relations, stabilize the economic situation, and resolve the disputing questions in the foreign policy? No matter how successful and praised the police actions and interventions are, yet they are not sufficient for cementing security!
