Project Portfolio Management Essentials

Portfolio management is an increasingly critical leadership competency and organisational capability. Disruptive digital technologies, including AI and robotic automation, IoT, block chain, cryptocurrencies, big data, and cyber security, are impacting all industries. No organisation is immune.

Business and government leaders need to respond effectively to the threats and opportunities presented by these developments, managing dramatically increased levels of innovation and investment in products, services, processes, systems, and ways of working.

The more disruption in the marketplace the greater the demand for change by organisations both in terms of volume and complexity. Very often this requires “whole-of-organisation” transformation.

Success requires the development of “portfolio thinking” at all levels. Portfolio thinking is the ability of leaders to marshal and deploy their people, creativity and other resources and assets most effectively to prioritise and execute multiple change initiatives. Leaders need to be knowledgeable of, and able to apply, portfolio management techniques within a structured, repeatable process.
