Fans of cosy mysteries solved over tea are advised to look elsewhere. Ragdoll is unabashedly gory—the title refers to a corpse cobbled together from the body parts of multiple murder victims. Despite or because of this gruesome premise, you’ll be drawn into this dark thriller as Detective William Fawkes (a.k.a. Wolf) and former partner Emily Baxter try to identify the victims and prevent the body count from climbing. Yet Daniel Cole’s fast pacing doesn’t sacrifice character development, with Fawkes and Baxter’s intense relationship played out brilliantly against the race to catch the serial killer.

Set in London, Cole's strong first novel a gritty fusion of police procedural, mystery, and thriller follows emotionally unstable detective William "Wolf" Fawkes as he attempts to track down a killer who dismembers his victims and stitches various body parts back together to create a nightmarish single "ragdoll." As a team of overworked investigators diligently searches for clues, it becomes apparent that all the victims are somehow connected to a highly controversial case in Fawkes's past, one that involved freeing a man suspected of being London's most prolific serial killer (27 teenage prostitutes killed in 27 days). When the press receives a list of the killer's future victims and the exact dates of their deaths, Fawkes whose name is last on the list realizes that he has just a few weeks to find the deranged psychopath and save himself. Cole uses the rising tension and the mystery of the killer's true identity to create a page-turning narrative, though the final payoff seems a bit underwhelming after such a powerful setup. This is a great read. The lead detective is listed as a potential victim and then his colleagues add him to the list of suspects. You just have to keep reading to find out who the killer is and how he selects his victims.

I've just finished reading Ragdoll on my iPhone. I found it to be an intriguing hard to put down book. Great characters and excellent plot. Very excitedly now waiting the next instalment. Congratulations Daniel Cole on a wonderful book
