Publisher Description

For the French Realist painter Gustave Courbet, the rivalry between the sister arts of painting and music was genuinely stimulating and productive in ways as yet rarely considered or understood. Through his relations with the composers Berlioz and Wagner, and the writers Baudelaire and Champfleury, as well as with popular song, Courbet exemplifies the principle that no art form in the mid nineteenth-century can be interpreted in isolation from the others. Moreover, the total work of art Courbet imagined embodied utopian political ambitions as well as artistic ones. Realism must be reconsidered with these factors in mind.
