Rembrandt

A London golfer idly turns a frame of Rembrandt etchings—and stops at a tiny image of a golf game. One unexpected likeness sends him into a world of hidden scholarship and long-forgotten genius.

Mortimer Menpes begins not with a grand portrait, but with a curious reader discovering how much lies beneath a familiar name. Rembrandt had once been Holland’s most celebrated painter; by the time he died in Amsterdam, his passing went almost unnoticed, and later critics dismissed the very qualities that now draw scholars to his work. Menpes follows the effort to recover the man from legend: the artist’s bold vision, his searching use of light and shadow, and the devoted researchers who sift fact from fable. What will the golfer uncover when he lifts the Rembrandt curtain?
