Remembering 9/11

The tenth anniversary of the attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001, is a time for reflection and remembrance. Gathering together photos taken in the immediate aftermath of the attack on the World Trade Center, Remembering 9/11 depicts street memorials spontaneously erected by New Yorkers mourning loved ones and grappling with the aftermath of terror. In the wake of destruction and loss, the people of New York dusted off the debris, comforted and healed each other, rebuilding their city and making use of public streets, stoops, homes, and walls to honor victims and express their unbroken spirit. Alongside the photos, a multilingual essay by author and photographer Martha Cooper reflects on New York City's resilient and diverse citizens, who together make up the greatest city in the world.

Sometimes camouflaged in this busy metropolis, these attributes are captured in Martha Cooper’s photographs, which could not be a more fitting legacy to the nearly 3,000 irreplaceable individuals hailing from ninety-two nations who never came home from work or arrived at their flight destinations on September 11, 2001."
