Publisher Description

“It has been the best part of 12 years since I investigated a fatal accident and dealt with grieving relatives. It has taken me 12 years to have the strength to write about it, to put pen to paper and record what has caused me so much grief and anguish.”

So writes Craig Hodge, one of Victoria Police’s leading investigators of fatal road accidents. A police officer for 20 years, eight of which he spent with the Accident Investigation Section (now the Major Collision Investigation Unit), Hodge attended the horrific scenes of more than 350 accidents that resulted in deaths and serious injuries. In Road Kill, Hodge recounts harrowing investigations and details the processes involved in finding out the causes of such tragedies, which often led to prosecutions. His story is a cautionary tale in which responsible driving messages loom large.

Road Kill also provides a poignant account of the emotional and psychological impact such carnage has on all involved, not least of all on investigators like Hodge, who struggled at times to find a balance between being sensitive to victims and their families, while also trying to remain emotionally detached for his own sanity and wellbeing.

Road Kill

A really inspirational read, I've always classed myself as a good In fact even an excellent driver as I was driving coaches professionally for 28 years. Reading this book has made me even better & certainly more cautious, best of luck to the writer.

A Must Read

I can honestly say reading this book has changed my view on driving and also my driving habits.
I witnessed a head on in beach road in the early 90,s. Mick Talbot was the investigator. What a professional. He kept me abreast of the drivers state and unfortunately had to ask me if l would attend court for him and the grieving spouse, which l did. This has brought the visions of that night back and reminded me how life can be snatched so violently because of careless actions whilst driving.

The most compelling, insightful book I've ever read

It’s truly heartbreaking to read about the atrocities that occur on our roads and the impact they have on the police investigators who are exposed to these horrific scenes on a daily basis, along with others who are left grieving the senseless loss of life. Craig Hodge has done an outstanding job of highlighting the importance of road safety and the consequences of negligence and stupidity behind the wheel. Even more outstanding was his commitment to Victoria Police and the hundreds of victims of road trauma for whom he fought justice. My heart and utmost respect goes out to all of the dedicated police—past and present—who investigate major collisions.
