"From the incomparable Winston Graham... who has everything that anyone else has, then a whole lot more" The Guardian
Ross Poldark is the first book in Winston Graham's sweeping series of Cornwall, Poldark.
Tired from a grim war in America, Ross Poldark returns to his land and his family. But the joyful homecoming he has anticipated turns sour, for his father is dead, his estate is derelict and the girl he loves is engaged to his cousin.
But his sympathy for the destitute miners and farmers of the district leads him to rescue a half-starved urchin girl from a fairground brawl and take her home - an act which alters the whole course of his life . . .
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Published in 1945, the first book in the Poldark series captivated us with its raw emotional drama. World-weary hero Ross returns home to Cornwall from the American Revolutionary War scarred and limping—and woefully unprepared for the disappointments he encounters, including his ruined estate. Author Winston Graham holds up a cinematic lens to his characters’ experiences, from the charged excitement of the annual pilchard fishing season to the tortured awkwardness of a family dinner. We could practically feel the Cornish sea breeze in our hair and laughed out loud at Aunt Agatha’s tactless remarks. Adapted into a successful TV series, this masterful saga gives Gone with the Wind a run for its money.
Customer Reviews
Wow!
I honestly can't sing enough praises for this book/series, right from the beginning the plot and the character suck you in. For anyone thinking of reading the book but isn't sure there is also a TV series on BBC1 or iTunes which is equally amazing
