Publisher Description

With complete and interactive audio, this book uses captivating art, silly sentences, and clear language to help children from ages 3 to 6 understand how the alphabet works. This understanding provides a foundation that makes learning to read as easy as possible and prevents reading difficulties. Because of the audio and interactivity, a young child can gain these skills with or without the assistance of an adult. It will give your child an unbeatable introduction to phonics, reading and even spelling.

This alphabet book is very different. It teaches children what they really need to know to be ready to read, and it leaves out any extra or confusing information. The focus of this book is on the sounds letters stand for instead of on the names of letters. Letter names don't help us read, but they confuse children about the relationship between letters and sounds. There is also no "A is for airplane" in this book. The first sound in "airplane" is spelled by the two letters ai influenced by the letter r. And what does "is for" mean, anyway? Most alphabet books are full of these kinds of words, especially for the vowel letters. This book only includes words that begin with the sound the letter spells most often when it is not part of a letter team.

Each letter in the alphabet is introduced along with the sound it spells most often and a simple word that includes that sound. A silly sentence and illustration is then provided in which most words start with that sound and letter. Special illustrations and mnemonic devices are provided for the vowel letters because vowel sounds can be more difficult to differentiate than consonants.

A video and written introduction for adults provides information that helps parents and teachers understand how to better help children learn to read. The video and introduction explain why a child needs to see letters and think of sounds, not letter names, to become ready to read. It explains how to avoid language and methods that can delay a child’s understanding of the relationship between letters and sounds.
