SIDDHARTHA

This book is included in the 13th series of our “The Most Classical English Literature Library”. It is a selection of Siddhartha, a classic work by Hermann Hesse, a famous German writer. This is Hesse’s ninth work, published in Germany in 1922, which describes the two “selves” of the main character Siddhartha - the rational infinite “self” and the sensual finite “self”. Through the description of these two “selves”, Hesse explores the question of how an individual can pursue the infinite and eternal realm of life in a finite life. The reader can gain insight into the writer’s love and reverence for humanity, his wise understanding of life and the universe, his call and aspiration to the traditional humanitarian ideal, and his acceptance and borrowing of the wisdom of Eastern, especially Chinese, thought as a Westerner.
