Publisher Description

Study, experimental, or research design is the backbone of good research. It directs the experiment by orchestrating data collection, defines the statistical analysis of the resultant data, and guides the interpretation of the results. When properly described in the written report of the experiment, it serves as a road map to readers, (1) helping them negotiate the "Methods" section, and, thus, it improves the clarity of communication between authors and readers. A growing trend is to equate study design with only the statistical analysis of the data. The design statement typically is placed at the end of the "Methods" section as a subsection called "Experimental Design" or as part of a subsection called "Data Analysis." This placement, however, equates experimental design and statistical analysis, minimizing the effect of experimental design on the planning and reporting of an experiment. This linkage is inappropriate, because some of the elements of the study design that should be described at the beginning of the "Methods" section are instead placed in the "Statistical Analysis" section or, worse, are absent from the manuscript entirely.
