SUN IN FLIGHT is tragi-comedy. Three generations of Kindlers live in a world lurching from Hiroshima to Woodstock to 9/11. Terror of the Bomb becomes fear of Terror. Dreamtime magic seeps into daytime reality. The wider focus is on the arms race. Cold Storage, the fourth volume, begins at the 1970 Isle of Wight pop festival. Sammy studies sociology and dope, Harry becomes a serious biochemist, mongrel Keele dies and Patty fixates on dolphins. Sammy becomes a bus driver and dreams of apes. Dipper the pug appears. Cal quits stockbroking and Maggie founds a school for rich Arab girls. The school thrives, Cal doesn't, Patty retreats to Wales, Harry becomes a corporate high-flier and Sammy flees to Mexico, where he marries Rosa and is handed the anti-nuke baton by a tired Burl. Harry is transferred Mexico. Bombings in Beirut bring talk of terrorism. Harry Oakshott loses his sight, regains it and dies an ironic, humdrum and heroic death.
