Tchaikovsky, His Life and Works - With Extracts From His Writings, and The Diary of His Tour Abroad in 1888

Rosa Newmarch was an English writer on music. Beginning in 1897 she did a great deal of research on Russian music, making many visits to Russia and working at the Imperial Public Library of Saint Petersburg under the supervision of Vladimir Stassov. She became one of the first English critics to champion Russian music.

"His character was essentially Russian, and his tendencies the liberating tendencies of the generation to which he belonged; but his musical education was cosmopolitan, and the teachers whom he most reverenced leaned towards tradition and authority."
