Publisher Description
Frank and funny, this memoir vividly recounts the first 17 years of the author's life in Sydney's slums and in New South Wales' countryside. Abandoned by her mother as a baby and by her volatile grandmother as a young girl, Kate Howarth was shunted between Aboriginal relatives and expected to grow up fast. It was a childhood beset by hardship, abuse, profound grief, and poverty, but buoyed with the hope that one day she would make a better life for herself and her child. Incredibly moving, this is the compelling true story of a childhood lost and a young woman's hard-won self-possession.

My mum was one of the women that has suffered all her adult life with the forced adoption of her daughter in 1971. I am her youngest child and she confides in me a lot, it’s very hard for her so I only know bits and pieces. Your books have helped me be more understanding towards my mother as she has endured so much and suffers from depression, PTSD, and other mental health issues. She is a very good mother and I wish she could open up more to me so I can continue to help her heal. In good news she did manage to track down her daughter when her daughter was in her early 20’s, they lost touch for about 10 years but then I found her on Facebook, when Facebook first became a thing and while we aren’t super close we do all visit each other and she is a lovely person and did wind up having loving adoptive parents who treated her very well, no trauma. My heart is broken for every mother and child who has endured this pain.
