Dominic Kopecky dreamed of becoming a member of New York's Metropolitan Witch Police—a dream dashed when he failed the test for magical aptitude. Now he spends his days drawing the hexes the MWP relies on for their investigations.
But when a murder by patent hex brings crow familiar Rook to his desk, Dominic can't resist the chance to experience magic. And as the heat grows between Dominic and Rook, so does the danger. Because the case has been declared closed—and someone is willing to kill to keep it that way.

Prequal to the Hex World series.
This is a short story, an introduction to the Hex World series. I wasn’t sure which book came first so I actually read book two, Hex Maker first, then I started to read book one, Hex Breaker, before deciding to check the reading the order and deciding that from now on, I’d read them in the correct order, as far as I can tell from the dates.
I was delighted with this short. It describes a wonderful world of witches and familiars in the setting of the New York police service of the late 1800’s. The author has a lovely, easy writing style with humour and excitement woven into the story.
Rook and Dominic sense their connection even if Dominic thinks it’s only because of a normal attraction - little does he know that it’s something more.
Good fun read.
