APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Fans of The Selection will warm right up to Kiera Cass’ follow-up historical romance. Set in the 15th-century court of the vain and volatile King Jameson, The Betrothed follows 16-year-old Hollis Brite, the latest object of the king’s affection. But carefree Hollis isn’t so easily swayed by her royal suitor, especially after encountering a dark horse contender for her heart. As the king openly abuses his power and his rival reminds Hollis of the importance of feeling seen, this emotional YA pageturner sets the stage for a powerful conclusion that will unfold across a second book.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Lady Hollis Brite, a charming member of the Coroan royal court, is ordered around by her overbearing parents and attended by her best friend, outcast Delia Grace. Having captured the heart of the handsome young Coroan king, Jameson, Hollis suddenly faces the very real prospect of being Coroa's next queen, despite her family's inferior social standing and her own lack of political interest. Jameson is smitten with Hollis's honest stories and optimism, but the Coroan nobility is not. When the Eastoffe family arrives seeking asylum from the neighboring rival nation of Isolte, Hollis is captivated by the oldest son, Silas, and questions both her feelings for Jameson and her desire to be queen. Cass's trademark love triangle is set against the fictitious 16th-century kingdom of Coroa and its elaborate customs, and the threat posed by the insidious Isolte king adds some needed danger. Though Hollis begins with an unfortunate deference toward Jameson that at first makes her seem timid, she has found both her voice and her spine by the end of this duology opener, becoming a headstrong heroine whom Cass's loyal following will champion. Ages 13 up.

Fine.
I have been a big Keira Cass fan and pre-ordered this book way back when. I dedicated my Saturday to reading it and I feel slightly jibbed.
It’s well written and a fine read, but sorely lacking for... something. Direction? Intrigue? For me to care about the characters?
I really never felt the characters interactions were genuine. Her best friend is a backstabber but she is 100% ok with it. The king flitters between cool, kind and caring; and being an insolent ass. Silas seems fun but instrumentally flawed.
Then the big shock at the end just felt indulgent. Like it was supposed to be a big unexpected turn of events. It was. But, it never felt like it was truely happening. It was rushed, random and I felt completely removed from the storyline for the last 50 pages.
It’s certainly not the worst book I’ve read but I have seen the building of a relationship Keira can do and this was just messy and inconsistent.
It’s still an enjoyable read but I had high hopes and feel that the integrity of the characters was sorely lacking and it was just kind of meh.
Lots left to be desired.
Long time fan and was excited to see new release.
This book has disappointed me though. I felt no connection to the character and everything felt so rushed. This story certainly could have been told with more depth.
The twist was interesting but certainly no real build up or heart wrenching impact.
