Her eyes flew wide as she realized that the man who dragged her into an alleyway was not her dark seducer, but rather an attacker who pinned her against the wall and covered her mouth with a steely hand. Fear spiked her emotions and drove her body into a new sense of adrenaline. His strength was inhuman. She was lifted off the ground, her feet swinging freely, as her attacker snarled in a voice thick with  hunger. His face was white as bone. Pointed fangs, impossibly long,  protruded from his open mouth. A vampire.

Emily knew her situation was hopeless. Still, she never stopped fighting, kicking, and hitting until he pinned his massive body against hers, staring into her eyes with a look so fierce that it nearly stopped her heart.

"Stop your struggling, girly," the voice that erupted from his rough, ravaged face did more than match the brutal hold that rendered her powerless, "How quickly you betray the man of your heart! That's right. I know who you are... whose you are. You seem to have forgotten. But, you see, I do not. My kind does not forget."

"What... what are you talking about?" she writhed in his grasp.

"I can still see the creature in your mind. I can see his face—the face of the damnable cretin who begat me."

He answered the question in her eyes with a low, cool cackle.

"That's right, girly," he nodded with a sadistic grin. "I am the progeny of Damian Corinth." Her heart attacked her ribs from her panic and shock. "I've been searching the streets of London for years—seeking the man who denies me my birthright. And when I heard tell of his fame, when I learned that his woman," he spat sideways in disgust, "-would soon be in town, why... I made certain to happen upon her. To repay a favor long overdue." He leaned so close that his fangs scraped up her trembling cheek. "You understand me?"

She cringed as his smile turned downright evil; revealing the fangs that now seemed aimed in the direction of her neck.

Her eyes stared unyielding into his as she refused to cry or plead, though her pulse raced as darkness closed around her in a fierce, unyielding cloak. Her heart nearly stopped as she looked death in the eyes and felt his fangs close in on her neck.

The vampire's eyes went wide as a heavy impact shook his body. Another blow struck from behind. In an instant, the force that pinned her to the wall fell loose and limp before her. A shadowy form rose up behind the felled vampire.

Emily smiled in relief and reached out to the newcomer, struggling to find her breath.

Her grin dissolved seconds later, as the dark figure of Nolan drew a sharp rustic stake from his long dark coat and held it high in the air above him. His face contorted in rage and exultation.

"Wait, Nolan-!" Emily cried, reaching out to stop him.
