Introduction Looked after children traumatised in early life are at risk of developing psychological disorders, among them psychiatric problems (eg anxiety, depression), developmental disorders (eg attention deficit hyperactivity, learning difficulties), conduct problems (eg oppositional defiant disorders, delinquent activity), physically abusive behaviour (eg bullying) and inappropriate sexual activity (eg abuse of younger children) (Keane, 1983; McCann et al, 1996; Wilson and Dunn, 1996; Minnis et al, 2001; Herbert, 2003).
