The Definition of Understanding

The Definition of Understanding is a compilation of the thoughts and perspectives of Jeremiah T. Sailor, a man who epitomizes the “Black” experience. The Black Lives Matter movement has highlighted the injustices Black America face daily. Racism, an abusive criminal justice system, mass incarceration, and social and economic oppression are common obstacles many African-Americans have to overcome. Through adversity, Mr. Sailor has stood strong as a patriarch and man of faith, offering love, support, and guidance to all around him. His strong faith in God is the beacon that has guided him through the darkness. The poems and short literary pieces that comprise The Definition of Understanding highlight the value of faith and the racism ingrained in America’s social and political fabric.
