Interesting premise but often verbose

This book gets bogged down in the political and becomes dreary. It’s difficult to connect with the characters due to the frequent jumping around and dry tone. It felt to me like a couple of interesting plot lines overly padded out with political agenda. I don’t have an issue with political agenda and I am a feminist but it’s supposed to be a story?
It’s a strongly feminist book in some aspects but still limits itself in its imaginings.
The plot line in China seemed to be a desperate attempt for relevancy but didn’t really make sense if you know more about China than the average person.
It’s dystopian more than apocalyptic, but also contradictory and some of the plot lines seemed inadequately thought out, while the medical science is patchy and dated with no awareness of the diversity that exists in genetics beyond simple immunity “xy” and”xx” chromosomes- it’s not always so simple. They threw in some token trans characters as an afterthought that felt forced as they were clearly told to incorporate more diversity- this book reads like a checklist of what to include rather than a compelling tale. The ending was pretty flat and this book was overall annoying and forgettable.
Also found two typos, and I wasn’t even trying.
