Enjoyable short story that starts with witches gagged and imprisoned by the magic users of the Silver Circle. A vampire chooses Gillian to help him in an investigation, and when she helps a weakened old woman to get her gag out, the old witch passes on the leadership powers to Gillian. In the big break out attempt she thinks she's going to die, and makes a deal with the vampire to help each other.
