Publisher Description

From the critically-acclaimed author of Prince of Thorns and Red Sister comes a chilling new epic fantasy series.

'If you like dark you will love Mark Lawrence. And when the light breaks through and it all makes sense, the contrast is gorgeous' – Robin Hobb

Only when it's darkest can you see the stars.

East of the Black Rock, out on the ice, lies a hole down which broken children are thrown

On the vastness of the ice there is no room for individuals. No one survives alone.

To resist the cold, to endure the months of night when even the air itself begins to freeze, requires a special breed. Variation is dangerous, difference is fatal. And Yaz is different.

Torn from her family, from the boy she thought she would spend her life with, Yaz has to carve a new path for herself in a world whose existence she never suspected. A world full of danger.

Beneath the ice, Yaz will learn that Abeth is older and stranger than she had ever imagined.

She will learn that her weaknesses are another kind of strength. And she will learn to challenge the cruel arithmetic of survival that has always governed her people.

‘An excellent writer’

‘Mark Lawrence gets better with every book. It has a drive to it, a pulse, a gearshift that kicks higher and higher’

‘Dark, passionate, tense, with a female hero anyone could relate to–I was utterly fascinated! This is no pretty, flowery tale, but one of vastly different people struggling to survive when a hostile government comes to power’

About the author

Mark Lawrence was born in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, to British parents but moved to the UK at the age of one. He went back to the US after taking a PhD in mathematics at Imperial College to work on a variety of research projects including the ‘Star Wars’ missile defence programme. Returning to the UK, he has worked mainly on image processing and decision/reasoning theory. He says he never had any ambition to be a writer so was very surprised when a half-hearted attempt to find an agent turned into a global publishing deal overnight. His first trilogy, The Broken Empire, has been universally acclaimed as a ground-breaking work of fantasy, and both The Liar’s Key and The Wheel of Osheim have won the Gemmell Legend award for best fantasy novel. Mark is married, with four children, and lives in Bristol.

Great author, disappointing inconsistency in the characters

I don’t believe you need to have read the somewhat related trilogy. You can start here, but the story is complex, as a fantasy should IMHO. I love the author and the depth and complexity of the stories. There is a new twist and turn in every chapter, which keeps it exciting.

Unfortunately in this novel I struggled with the inconsistency of the morality and intelligence of the characters, especially Yaz, the central figure. Her passion to do good and help others was completely at odds with her actions to return home with a small group of friends abandoning thousands of others in need that she could have saved and lead. She had great advice from mystic leaders but still couldn’t see the bigger picture and opportunity to be great and save all those most in need.

I wanted to like but in the end found her shallow.

The story and characters could have been so much richer. Perhaps book two will make it up or make it clearer.

Worlds apart

Loved going back into this world of uniqueness , grief and savagery that’s been created. A great read by a talented author

Enjoyed

I found this book compelling. Did not want to put it down until the last page was read. Will await the second in this series with enthusiasm. Enjoyed being thrown into ‘The Pit’ and the uncovering of the characters and mysteries found there. I like the dark side to this book.
Do not think you need to of read any of his other books to get what is going on here.
