APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
The undisputed master of the legal thriller gets personal in The Guardians, which is inspired by his admiration for the work of faith-based organizations fighting on behalf of the wrongfully accused. John Grisham’s novel stars Cullen Post, a lawyer working to exonerate Quincy Miller, a black man framed for murder by powerful people over 20 years ago. But righting that wrong could mean a death sentence for the innocence crusader himself. The Guardians is filled with righteous social commentary, but it still shows off Grisham’s talent for suspense and plot twists. The novel’s as gripping as previous thrillers like A Time to Kill, but it also tugged at our heartstrings.

Guardians of the Gaol-axy
Author
American. His legal thrillers have sold >100 million copies. Nuff said.
Plot
Cullen Post, a disenchanted young lawyer, became a priest then joined a small non-profit (Guardian Ministries) dedicated to liberating (legally) innocent people who have been wrongly convicted and jailed by the US legal system. He’s tenacious as hell and poor as a church mouse. His successes are his reward. We hear about a few of his cases and follow one in detail. It features crooked cops, perjurers, dodgy expert witnesses, drug cartels, ruthless Aryan brotherhood types in jail, and so on.
Characters
Post is drawn in most detail. He’s virtuous to a fault, but sneaky too. He’s a lawyer, after all. His co-workers at the non-profit are similarly driven. Frankie, a black guy Post sprung after 14 years in the slammer for a crime he did not commit, plays Tonto. Parental advisory: Contains venal Southern lawyers.
Location
Savannah and rural Florida mostly, with side trips to other downmarket parts of the Land of The Free, and more than a few jails.
Narrative
First person by Post
Prose
Polished as ever by Mr Grisham, who varies his pace cleverly to suit the narrative. The story line wanders a bit, which it must, but Mr G is such a good writer that he maintains excellent control throughout, making it an easy read. My only quibble was near the end when our hero found an actual skeleton in an actual closet in a (supposedly) haunted house. This was cast aside as an amusing anecdote when it could have been incorporated into the plot. I would have, but what would I know? Mr Grisham makes the big bucks; I don’t.
Bottom line
Pretty good but Confessions of Innocent Man (2019) by David R Dow, a law professor from Houston who specialises in getting innocents exonerated, was better.
Thanks
Another great yarn from John Grisham, didn’t want it to end!
Engrossing
Nobody writes a crime novel like Grisham. The last paragraph is pure gold.
