Publisher Description

'A perfect novel about life's imperfection... Tremain is writing at the height of her inimitable powers...' Kate Kellaway, Observer

What is the difference between friendship and love?

Gustav grows up in a small town in Switzerland, where the horrors of the Second World War seem a distant echo.

But Gustav's father has mysteriously died, and his adored mother Emilie is strangely cold and indifferent to him. Gustav's life is a lonely one until he meets Anton.

An intense lifelong friendship develops but Anton fails to understand how deeply and irrevocably his life and Gustav's are entwined until it is almost too late...

'Heartbreaking, unsentimental and beautifully written, and it reinforces my opinion that there are few writers out there with the dexterity or emotional intelligence to rival that of the great Rose Tremain.' John Boyne, The Irish Times

Summary
Gustav is a boy growing up in a small town in Switzerland during World War Two. Jews keep crossing the border trying to escape the Nazis, but most Swiss aren't queueing up to help in case they attract the ire of The Third Reich. Gustav's father Erich, a policeman, compromises his family's safety by assisting escaping Jews, then dies at least partly as a result, which pisses his wife Emilie off something fierce. Young Gustav meanwhile adores his mother, but she seems to like herself more and doesn't reciprocate. As a result, the lad develops a "stiff upper lip." As luck would have it, Gustav's classmate and BFF Anton is Jewish, and an aspiring musician. The boys do stuff together. The second part is a flashback to the romance between Erich and Emilie, a mismatch socially that prospered largely because Erich adored her. Emilie was very much into being adorated. In the third movement, middle aged Gustav is running a struggling hotel that bears no resemblance to Fawlty Towers unfortunately, while Anton has finally achieved success as a musician. Gustav experiences a fair dose of schadenfreude as a result. Oh, and Emilie dies.

Writing
The "sonata" of the title reflects the three-part structure of the book. Clever, eh?
The style is very polished, but I'm not sure what I was supposed to get out of it. The relevance of the middle section eluded me, not unlike modern classical music does.

Bottom line
Well written and not very long.
