Publisher Description

The Hobbit is the unforgettable story of Bilbo, a peace-loving hobbit, who embarks on a strange and magical adventure.

A timeless classic.

Bilbo Baggins enjoys a quiet and contented life, with no desire to travel far from the comforts of home; then one day the wizard Gandalf and a band of dwarves arrive unexpectedly and enlist his services – as a burglar – on a dangerous expedition to raid the treasure-hoard of Smaug the dragon. Bilbo’s life is never to be the same again.

Seldom has any book been so widely read and loved as J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic tale, ‘The Hobbit’. Since its first publication in 1937 it has remained in print to delight each new generation of readers all over the world, and its hero, Bilbo Baggins, has taken his place among the ranks of the immortals of fiction.

the hobbit

This is a mind stretching novel for young readers looking for a book with more layers and artistry than the usual "children's literature". I first read it as a 13 year old and have read it a number of times since. It stands in its own right as an enthralling tale of magic and adventure in a far away and long forgotten place. But it also sets up the back story for The Lord Of The Rings and builds the reader's attachment to the foundation characters of that tome. I read it to my son when he was 5 years old. He loved it and we finished it over a two week window of before bedtime reading. A naturally advanced reader, he was bored with the usual fare and Tolkien's intelligence, sense of fun and drama and his capacity to build the layers of the story opened my boy's mind to what treasures could be found inside the covers of a good book. He went on to read the Hobbit and LOTR and myriad other challenging novels. I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone looking for a children's book with a bit of grist for the mill!
