Mawson turned down an invitation to join Robert Falcon Scott's Terra Nova Expedition in 1910; Australian geologist Griffith Taylor went instead. Dawson chose to lead his own expedition, the Australian Antarctic Expedition, to King George V Land and Adelie Land, the sector of the Antarctic continent immediately south of Australia, which at the time was almost entirely unexplored. The objectives were to carry out geographical exploration and scientific studies, including visiting the South Magnetic Pole.

Perhaps one of the greatest stories of exploration and adventure ever told and yet largely unknown in the authors homeland. "The Home of the Blizzard" is no dry account of one the most successful scientific expeditions of all time. Instead, through great prose, Mawson provides a detailed account of a story of survival almost unrivalled in the annals of human history. Extracts from this story captured my imagination as a child and kindled a longing to travel to Antarctica. I fulfilled that dream some many years later and this book sits proudly amongst my Antarctic book collection ready to bring memories of my trips to the Great South flooding back at the flip of a page. A must read for everyone.
