This manual is aimed at providing the knowledge required by candidates for the New Zealand Instrument Rating examinations in the subjects ‘Instruments and Navigation Aids’ and ‘Flight Navigation IFR’. The manual is in two parts to reflect those two separate but related subjects.
The material in Chapters 1 to 12 of Part 1 covers the NZCAA syllabus for the Instruments and Navigation Aids examination. It should be noted that Chapter 12 on GNSS also provides, in effect, a pilot training syllabus for the Instrument Rating GPS endorsement. This chapter has again been updated in this edition of the manual.
Chapter 13 of Part 1 gives an introductory coverage of Performance Based Navigation. The topics in this chapter are not at present required study for the instrument rating, although it is possible it will become required study in future. In particular, the RNAV (GNSS) is a rapidly developing type of instrument approach that you will need to become familiar with in the near future, if you don't already.
Part 2 gives a comprehensive coverage of the topics associated with Flight Navigation IFR (Plotting). The text is based on the assumption that the reader is familiar with the contents of our Waypoints PilotBooks Volume 2, Navigation and Flight Planning.
