A Proud Beauty
When the tragic death of her gamester father leaves her destitute and alone, society beauty Sylvia Stafford finds work as a governess in a merchant's household in Cheapside. Isolated from the fashionable acquaintance of her youth, she resigns herself to lonely spinsterhood...until a mysterious visitor convinces her to temporarily return to her former life--and her former love.
A Scarred Beast
Colonel Sebastian Conrad is no longer the dashing cavalry officer Sylvia once fell in love with. Badly scarred during the Sepoy Rebellion, he has withdrawn to his estate in rural Hertfordshire where he lives in near complete seclusion. Brooding and tormented, he cares nothing for the earldom he has inherited--and even less for the faithless beauty who rejected him three years before.
A Second Chance
A week together in the remote Victorian countryside is the last thing either of them ever wanted. But when fate intervenes to reunite them, will a beastly earl and an impoverished beauty finally find their happily-ever-after? Or are some fairy-tale endings simply not meant to be?
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Lost love letters, lies, and betrayals separate a soldier from the woman he loves in this gripping, emotional Victorian romance from Matthews (the Parish Orphans of Devon series). Sebastian Conrad returns to the English countryside from India following the rebellion of 1857, covered in scars, wracked with night terrors, and convinced that Sylvia Stafford, the woman he loves, no longer loves him back. Why else would she have halted their correspondence while he was abroad? Before Sebastian left for India, Sylvia was a naive romantic, but in the three years since she last saw or heard from him, life has been cruel to the former baroness. Her father's gambling addiction and suicide left her penniless, alone, and stripped of her title. Now Sebastian and Sylvia's differing social ranks and years of misunderstandings stand in the way of their happiness, but Julia Harker, Conrad's sprightly, nosey, and delightfully dramatic younger sister, is determined to bring them back together. The chemistry between these star-crossed lovers is undeniable, and Matthews imbues their sweeping romance with just the right amount of period detail to make the setting come alive. Historical romance fans should snap this one up. (Self-published)

Loved it
A great story with excellent characters that is well written. I will look for more by this author.
Authenticity, genuine emotion and a happy ending.
In Mimi Matthew’s debut novel I happily found an Author dedicated to the authenticity of the period. A compelling story of genuine emotion with the obligatory happy ending. The characters were written with such a richness and depth that I have rarely seen in recent years, with wonderful secondary characters who provided some added humour. A special mention must go to the brilliantly portrayed Milsom, valet and former batman.
