The Maya Empire was centered in the tropical lowlands of today’s Guatemala. This civilization was one of the most dominant societies of Mesoamerica. Their entire existence and disappearance are wrapped in mystery and are subjects of many explorations.

The origins of Maya can be tracked back to approximately 1800 B.C., in the beginning of the Pre-classic Period. Their power and influence were the greatest around the sixth century A.D. But, something unknown happened in the period from the late eighth century through to the end of the ninth century, which made them leave their cities and caused their disappearance. Behind them, they left an enormous amount of impressive architecture and symbolic artwork.
