APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Romance and mystery loom against the larger-than-life backdrop of Coney Island’s titular “freak show” in this lush novel. Casting back to 1911, Hoffman tells the story of Coralie Sardie, the would-be mermaid in her father’s boardwalk menagerie of outcasts. When she meets a Russian photographer also dwelling on the fringes of New York society, the encounter reshapes her world forever. Delivered in radiant, lingering prose, this love letter to misfits will appeal to fans of The Night Circus and Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As usual, Hoffman balances a dreamy tone and lavish touches with timeless themes.
