The Mystery of Kissing Gate Wood
The second offering in the Bess Hooper mystery series is a very enjoyable sequel to the original book and takes up the story of accidental historical sleuth Bess Hooper where book one leaves off. Whilst this book is slightly shorter than the first, I felt it was a more focused and ‘comfortable’ read than the first publication. I liked the fact that this storyline seemed more ‘pared back’ focusing on just two central mysteries, which resolved quite neatly, whilst at the same time balancing that mystery element with the daily realities facing the adolescent heroine (the sometimes endearing little brother, irritation with a new ‘high maintenance’ acquaintance, frustration and anxiety about a broken leg, fascination and infatuation with a boy).i feel this book’s target audience would be the early/young adult reader, particularly those interested in mysteries.
