The Nightmare Room #6: They Call me Creature
If you’ve been reading my reviews on my adventures through the Nightmare Room series, then you would know that the third instalment, My Name is Evil, has been my favourite. However, the sixth instalment, They Call me Creature can rival it, also being the only one to get a five star review so far. Like “evil,” “Creature” follows one of darker and more frightening story lines, a girl discovers horrible half pig half human/ animal beasts reside in the woods beside her house, and her father may be responsible for creating them.
Like the recently read instalment in the series, “Dear Diary, I’m Dead” “Creature’s” story comes from one of the more popular Goosebumps books, “Stay out of the basement” where siblings discover their father may be a mad scientist and is doing terrifying tests on plants, this book replacing that with animals and the mystery of her father, him never seeming guilty. However, this book is arguably better and much scarier than Stay out of the Basement.
Like “Evil” this book is one of the darker instalments, nonetheless being one of the scariest. This book definitely isn’t for the squeamish, because while it is kid friendly it also has got some acts of serious animal violence along with some shockingly gruesome scenes of the pig creatures and torn apart animals, which is an interesting style of horror to have in a kids book. Then you add the possibly malevolent father and you’ve got yourself the scariest instalment in the series so far that I could not put down.
The only problem I have with it was the prologue, which, while frightening because it was told in a way that something horrifying will happen to our protagonist Laurie at the end, but it never happens. However, besides that there’s really nothing wrong with the book.
Overall, They Call me Creature is a fantastic instalment into the series that can rival My Name is Evil, if not dethrone it has the best book in the series so far
