Juliette would indeed be The Perfect Girlfriend, were it not for one or two, or several dozen, major red flags. Karen Hamilton’s fantastic debut novel is as indefatigable as its obsessive, deluded main character, who’ll do just about anything to be with Nate, the man of her dreams. This breathless psychological thriller is a seriously fun, if terrifying, read that turns the intensity of love into something sinister.

Elizabeth Juliette Price, the narrator of Hamilton's fascinating debut set mainly in England, believes that she has found her one true love in commercial pilot Nate Goldsmith, until he tells her he needs space. Not one to be brushed off, she devises a plan to win him back, complete with motivational mantras. She starts using her middle name, Juliette, and begins training as a flight attendant for Nate's airline. A fresh mantra soon springs to her mind: "If you love someone, set them free. If they come back, they're yours. If they don't, make them." She later observes, "It's true that there is a fine line between love and hate, and I have crossed it." Because Juliette doesn't follow the expected norms of behavior, it's impossible to predict what she'll do next. In her pursuit of Nate, she ends up committing a crime. But will she get away with it? Hamilton subtly unveils the reasons for Juliette's obsession, creating moments where the reader feels a surge of sympathy for this original and plucky, yet delusional, protagonist. Great book but the abrupt ending was annoyingly average, it was as if the writer just gave up on the spur of the moment
One minute you're gripped, the next it's suddenly finished as if the pages have run out?

This book was riveting and I could not put it down. But the ending was so bad, it seriously detracted from the enjoyment of it. It was as though the author couldn’t think of an ending so didn’t bother writing one. Or just ran out of puff and ideas and threw it aside. Very disappointing. This psychological thriller shows how far a girl will go to get the love of her life. Juliette will not let Nate get away, she is determined to get her happy ever after. It is actually really scary to see just how far she is prepared to go, and who she is prepared to use to get the outcome she wants.
