Publisher Description
The turbulent events that overtook Russia in 1917 are often called one of history’s great turning points. In March of that year, a corrupt, outdated, careworn autocracy - the 300-year-old Romanov dynasty - was overthrown by a spontaneous uprising of Russia’s long-oppressed masses. During the next few months, Alexander Kerensky and other liberals in the provisional government attempted to adopt reforms. But the continuing hardships of World War I and the pressure of Vladimir Lenin’s Bolsheviks proved too much for them. In the relatively bloodless coup d’état of November 7, Lenin and his associates seized control of the state. Here, from the eminent historian E. M. Halliday, is the dramatic story of the Russian Revolution.

The Russian Reolution
Whilst reading this historic account, of The Russian Revolution; I was very aware, that my Russian grandfather, who lived in St Petersburg; later Petrograd; would have been 40 years old in 1917. He fled Russia; and arrived on English shores; made his way to Manchester, where he met and married my grandmother; who around the time of the Pogroms of Poland; which was mentioned in this account; also fled to England; arriving in Manchester as well.
Between 1917 and 1923; they had Seven children; one of whom died. My mother, was the last of these children; all born in Manchester.
I was intrigued to read about Lenin, Trotsky and Stalin; particularly Lenin and Stalin, as I remember two enormous, framed photographs, hung on my grandfathers bedroom wall. Whilst I understand his love of Lenin; I cannot fathom his feelings; about such a tyrant as Stalin.
The account is extremely detailed, very well written; and gave me the feeling, I was actually there.
I was extremely surprised to learn, that Lenin could still be viewed, within a glass lidded coffin.
The story held my attention right up to the very last picture.
