As children, Ida loves looking after her younger sister, Nora, but when their beloved father dies in 1926, everything changes. The two young girls move in with their grandmother who is particularly encouraging of Nora's musical talent. Nora eventually follows her dream of a brilliant musical career, while Ida takes a job as a nanny and their lives become quite separate.
The two sisters are reunited when Nora's life takes an unwelcome direction and she finds herself, embittered and resentful, isolated in the Tasmanian bush with a husband and children.
Ida longs passionately for a family and when she marries Len, a reliable and good man, she hopes to soon become a mother. Over time, it becomes clear that this is never likely to happen. In Ida's eyes, it seems that Nora possesses everything in life that could possibly matter yet she values none of it.
Set in rural Tasmania over a span of seventy years, the strengths and flaws of motherhood are revealed through the mercurial relationship of these two very different sisters. The Sisters' Song speaks of dreams, children and family, all entwined with a musical thread that binds them together.

Enjoyable
I read this book in two days, I know that it’s good if I want to keep picking it up to read on.
It was very sad in parts, thought provoking, and so honest & truthful in the time/years it was set.
Taps into ones emotions and gets into your skin.
I saw this book come up on Facebook on the Launceston Examiner page, and being in between books I bought it.
Like the author I am a Tasmanian living on the “mainland” who also grew up near Launceston, from a similar vintage of ancestors. I also left in 2000 but the last few years it keeps drawing me back. Being particularly homesick this summer this book seemed to tap into that, I feel like I have been home and visited my memories without leaving town.
Feeling out of sorts this summer and out of kilter emotionally I have been craving a moving book or movie to trigger something in me and this did that. I know the author was a doctor in a previous life but sometimes words in books are more healing then medicine. I feel it’s lifted my dysphoria and lack of connectedness.
An emotional read, particularly if your family has mental health issues like mine. It reminded me of the power and importance of forgiveness especially to ones self and making the most you can out of life.
Thank you for the best read I have had in a while just when I needed it.
