James Michener always took big bites with his historical fiction, and The Source is a whopper that spans 12,000 years in the history of the Jewish people. American archeologist John Cullinane is overseeing a massive dig in Israel in 1964, at a site where the remnants of one ancient culture after another seem to pile right on top of each other. Every time his team uncovers artifacts from a different era, the narrative makes another mind-blowing jump backward to show how the people of that period lived—from their customs and religious rites to the tools they used. We learned a ton about how humanity, technology, and Judaism evolved—but for all of the meticulous historical research, we love that the story stays focused on individual characters. Leave it to a master like Michener to make more than ten thousand years of history feel personal.

A little too epic for me
I loved Chesapeake and Space, both equally as long as this, though I really struggled through large parts of this book. Brilliant writing as you would expect, just mostly not for me.
