A young Muslim student wearing a headscarf is denied her right of education in France, while a Catholic student wearing a cross or a Jewish student wearing a skullcap is not. The scene of French policemen preventing young Muslim women wearing headscarves from entering their high school is unforgettable. It inspires the memories of another equally disgraceful scene of Governor George Wallace of Alabama in 1962 standing in front of a school gate trying to block the entrance of black students in order to prevent the desegregation of Alabama's schools.

View-changer, though citation needed
This work dispelled my false notions about the rights and liberties of women as defined in the Quran. It is eloquent and sensible for the most part; bringing to the surface parts of the Talmud; Old & New Testament that most Western Christians and Jews would rather ignore. It places potentially unnecessary weight on an apocryphal work (Ecclesiasticus) for the sake of some arguments. Most importantly, this work tries (albeit unsuccessfully) to sensibly engage with core feminist theory in places. Despite acknowledging it is best if a woman's environment is attuned to her protection through the civility and education of its people, it endorses that women should change to fit their environment. One will find that is an unacceptable stance where the work of feminism is concerned. There are multiple baseless assertions regarding the Western zeitgeist; a number not befitting someone of the author's education. This book could be improved by more citation of scientific work. Nonetheless this is a worthwhile read.
