Brutal
I don't often read fantasy, but this was certainly an exemplar. Grimdark, no magic - or at least, we didn't see any, it actually hinted at something like magic at the end. Pure politics infused with a few fights that escalated. Intrigue so thick you could cut it with a knife. Think The Red Wedding but for an entire book, teased out until the climax. Definitely recommend it
