You can beat one killer. Beating your own squad is a whole other thing.

Being on the Dublin Murder squad is nothing like Detective Antoinette Conway dreamed. Her working life is a stream of thankless cases and harassment. Antoinette is tough, but she's getting close to the breaking point.

The new case looks like a regular lovers' quarrel gone bad. Aislinn Murray is blond, pretty and lying dead next to a table set for a romantic dinner. There's nothing unusual about her - except that Antoinette has seen her somewhere before.

And her death won't stay neat. Other detectives want her to arrest Aislinn's boyfriend, fast. There's a shadowy figure at the end of Antoinette's road. And everything they find out about Aislinn takes her further from the simple woman she seemed to be.

Antoinette knows the harassment has turned her paranoid, but she can't tell just how far gone she is. Is this the case that will make her career - or break it?

Glamorous young blonde called Aislinn is found dead in her home: punch to the jaw followed by nasty head wound from edge of fireplace en route to ground. Conway and Moran are exhausted after night shift when "the gaffer," which is Irish for the boss detective, lobs this case their way. He also sends a more experienced man, Breslin, to help out. That pisses Conway off almightily, which isn’t difficult to do. She gets to be narrator this time too, which means we hear all about it. Naturally enough, or unnaturally considering the vic’s hair colour and makeup, all was not sweetness and light about young Aislinn. Tired of the clandestine affair she was having with a middle- aged detective for reasons you’ll have to read the book to discover, she found new blood closer to her age bracket. Jealousy then reared it’s ugly green head. Cue slow burning tension, lots of intrigue, and mucho psychological issues affecting the dead girl and her fledgling new suitor, not to mention her best mate and several detectives, particularly Conway, who has more baggage than Kim Kardashian. Moran, on the other hand, is still an all round great guy, despite being a ranga. Blah, blah, blah… the good guys catch the baddie in the end. Conway shows disturbing signs of becoming human. Aislinn remains dead.
