Tribetastic!
Note - some spoilers may be ahead but will try my best not to reveal too much. As a long-time fan of The Tribe for many years I’ve been eagerly awaiting the next book, having enjoyed the previous two. Let’s just say there were some high expectations :) . The book delivers and is a worthy continuance of the story and characters I have come to love. Spoiler time: We see the return of some much loved and missed faces from the past, who it is a joy to reconnect with and find out what happened to them… The book expands the universe of The Tribe and we see more of the world the characters inhabit, a world that is building and slowly doing its best to recover from the virus (is this a post-post-apocalyptic time?) but is also at the risk of falling apart with many threats to the future. The world is still being fought for and nothing is for granted. There is a sinsiter but also amusing new villain who I enjoyed, not only giving me the creeps but some laughs. And a mysterious newcomer who has an inspiringng and poignant vision that struck a cord. It combines what The Tribe series was 20 years ago but also is a story for this current time with themes that are befitting and maybe prophetic. I wish we could have a series or movie but the book keeps the story and characters alive and in so doing also the dream stays alive. To be reconnected with Amber, Tai San, Ebony, Ram and so many more was a joy. It’s a very visual book and atmospheric set against an imaginative canvas. If you like series 4 and 5 especially (as I do) then you should like this which builds upon what happened then. It’s very much in the spirit of The Tribe and what makes it what it is but also adds something new. It was thought provoking and easy to read, moving along at a good pace. So overall., I really enjoyed it. I just wish it wasn’t so long between releases so there isn’t another 5 years.
The Dream seems to be over
A disappointing instalment to the series. Ray said that he ended the original series because it was beginning to stretch the core proposition, but oh boy the proposition has been completely thrown out by now.
A mediocre plot with The Tribe characters thrown in. Other well trodden post apocalyptic/sci fi tropes thrown in with lame Darwinian clap trap.
The book Kept me somewhat interested up until the reveal of Cami, which turned out to be a real dud. Flicked through as quickly as possible after that. The first 3/4s of the book doesn’t foreshadow the last quarter, which bursts out of nowhere.
Beloved characters Amber, Bray, Jack etc are so dull and boring in this book. Only Tai San is properly characterised from the original series, and even then... The characters lack meaningful dialogue. The writer seems to be preoccupied with rewriting in as many as the original cast as possible and once they get back in they fade into the background. Good to know they still exist at least.
Can’t believe they wheeled out the tired old Zootism plot device again. Aka The Chosen 3.0. Not even the virus is as persistent and it barely cops a mention. Also the Tribe has seriously lacked any sort of world building
If you enjoy the Tribe you’re better off rewatching the first 3 seasons on YouTube again.
I’m starting to think the same criticisms probably applies to the last 2 books but I can’t bring myself to read them again after this book
Ray, in the slim chance you get this series back onto the screen again, please don’t use it as canon.
