“I’d never done anything crazy like this before – a pilgrimage walk. I was not a hiker, and I wasn’t a Catholic. In fact, I wasn’t even sure I was a Christian. On the last government census when I had to state my religion, I’d said I was a Buddhist, mainly because they’ve had such a hard time in Tibet and I felt they needed my statistical support.
I was also not an adventure traveler. For me, adventure travel was flying coach. All this backpacking and wearing of heavy boots and flying off to France to walk ancient pilgrimage routes was a new experience, and not one that made me feel entirely comfortable.”
And so Bill Bennett, an Australian based film director, set off on an 800 kilometer walk across Spain to Santiago de Compostela, not sure why he was doing it, and not feeling entirely comfortable. His discomfort increased markedly a few days later when his knee gave out – so the rest of the walk was a “pain management pilgrimage.”
But he kept his sense of humor, and in the vein of Bill Bryson's and Eric Newby's travel memoirs, The Way, My Way takes you on a unique spiritual journey that's both deeply moving, and laugh-out-loud funny.

The one book on the Camino you HAVE to read
A WARNING: if you start reading this book, you can't put it down until you've finished it. I certainly could not and I've read many, many books on the Camino written by people from many countries with very varied stories to tell about their Camino journey. Bill Bennett's The Way, My Way is funny, witty, profound and very moorish. He is astonishingly open about his journey, both emotionally and physically; you very clearly feel his pain ripping out that toe nail and gag at the thought of that blister! Also, as a photographer Bill's photos accompanying his story are compelling and as insightful as his words. I sincerely hope Bill keeps travelling other Camino routes and writing his stories for us to be enthralled again.
Fantastic Book
One day I will walk the Camino, until then I will live vicariously through those that have by reading their personal journeys.
I've read many books on the Camino and this one now stands out as my favourite.
Bill's style of writing is engaging, humorous, self depreciating and always heart warming. I laughed, I cried, I worried about Bill and by the end I wanted to walk it even more - and give Bill a hug.
Thanks for sharing your journey with us all Bill.
The Way, My Way
I came across The Way, My Way while researching walking the Camino. Bill Bennett paints his own picture of the Camino de Santiago. He used something he calls his PGS, his personal guidance system, to guide him along the way. Sometimes it worked, occasionally it failed, but Bill gives a wonderful account of his journey. At times hilarious and at others informative, but always honest and from the heart, it is a terrific book. I highly recommend reading it if you are planning your own Camino. Peter Fanning
