Fresh from their victory in Germania, Marcus Aquila and the Tungrians have been sent to Dacia, on the north-eastern edge of the Roman Empire, with the mission to safeguard a major source of imperial power.
'A master of the genre' The Times
The mines of Alburnus Major contain enough gold to pave the road to Rome. They would make a mighty prize for the marauding Sarmatae tribesmen who threaten the province, and the outnumbered auxiliaries are entrusted with their safety in the face of a barbarian invasion.
Beset by both the Sarmatian horde and more subtle threats offered by men who should be their comrades, the Tungrians must also come to terms with the danger posed by a new and unexpected enemy.
They will have to fight to the death to save the honour of the empire - and their own skins.

Empire series made me start reading books again
I brought the first book in this series whimsically at a book shop in an airport terminal on a flight out of Australia for my honeymoon to a lazy island on instruction from my wife to find 3 or 4 books. Empire was the 3rd book I brought that day but ironically the first book I read. The only downside I have ever commented about ANY of the books is tree is and end.
I don't say this flippantly. From the start to the end I am hooked and the author does not seem to be bogged down on any issue or trying to over educate you on this era of history like another author I have been a keen reader of until his last book. Some academics should let the classroom be a classroom and there over education be left alone.
When all is said and done you read to escape. I wish through the wizardy of words tat I have read over and over again of this series it was put to film, but it would never capture the brilliance if this series.
I can't express how much I await the next instalment.
