It’s not just a cultural commentary, though; it’s a compulsive murder mystery too. Following a bereavement, Jane is drawn into an online crew of amateur detectives, who descend on a town in Idaho after three students are killed to help solve the case. But things soon go awry in this cleverly constructed narrative that consistently disorientates the reader. BookTok loves Winstead and it’s not hard to see why.

There, they confront the limitations of parasocial sleuthing and dig up even more darkness than they expected. Winstead ably tackles themes of grief, loneliness, and obsession, but the hefty page count drains the mystery plot of some tension. Still, it's a chilling and thought-provoking effort.
