New York (AirGuide - Travel Security Update) Mar 21, 2010 Passengers recall chaotic security at Schiphol on Christmas Day Based on extensive interviews with passengers, the Detroit News reconstructs the panic and confusion on board Northwest Flight 253 as its cabin filled with smoke and screams following the detonation of an explosive device. The confusion began at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, according to the paper, where security had to contend with large crowds due to bad weather and canceled flights. One passenger says she inadvertently went through security with a large bottle of water and was never asked to remove her shoes or coat. Another passenger remembers that alleged bomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab waited until the last minute to clear security and board the aircraft, claiming he was sick. But Abdulmutallab didn't look sick, she says in hindsight -- he looked nervous. Mar 19, 2010
