Before inspiring a TV series, Robyn Carr’s Virgin River books made us fall in love with a dreamy and made-up California town known for its clean forest air and salt-of-the-earth characters. The first book in the series revolves around nurse-midwife Melinda Monroe, who moves to the 600-person hamlet from the big city. At first she’s out of her element, but she quickly finds herself drawn to the tight-knit community—and especially to sexy former marine Jack Sheridan. We love Carr’s focus on how Mel rises up to the challenge of providing care in a place with few resources. She never idealises small-town living, portraying the realities of poverty and drug use. That makes for a sweet romance that never, ever feels twee.

A beautiful love story in a gorgeous setting. A simple and fairly predictable story but hey who doesn’t want that sometimes?
